“We had to run, holding our children’s hands as the ground shook violently beneath us,” recalled a 33-year-old mother.
On March 28, 2025, a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar near Mandalay, causing widespread devastation. The epicenter was located approximately 17 kilometers from Mandalay at a depth of 10 kilometers. Tremors were felt across Myanmar and in neighboring countries, including Thailand.
Thousands of families in Mandalay and Sagaing Regions were suddenly left without homes, belongings, or a sense of stability. Communities were shaken physically and emotionally.
“When the second quake struck, fire burst from the center of our house. Everything burned. I’ve never seen anything like it in my life,” explained a 33-year-old mother.
In response, ADRA provided cash assistance to 474 affected households across both regions, with distributions completed by April 5. The support allowed families to meet their most urgent needs whether purchasing household items, covering temporary shelter costs, or managing daily expenses while staying with relatives or in shared spaces.
“This cash support helps us buy what we truly need,” one recipient shared. “We’re now living in someone else’s yard, but with this assistance, we can start preparing for our own shelter. We are truly grateful.”
Families also acknowledged support received from other organizations, but the impact of ADRA’s direct assistance stood out. “We are so thankful to the donors who made this possible,” another recipient said. “Your kindness brings hope to families like ours.”

By restoring choice and dignity through flexible financial support, ADRA continues to stand with communities in times of crisis—helping them recover, rebuild, and move forward with renewed strength.

Note: On April 7 , ADRA is currently collecting beneficiary identification and registration information to continue providing cash assistance to affected people in Sagaing and Mandalay Regions.
