ADRA Responds to 5.6 Magnitude Earthquake in Indonesia

On Monday, 21 November 2022, a 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck Cianjur Regency in West Java, Indonesia. Since then, 140 aftershocks have been reported and triggered landslides burying entire villages.

Recent reports state there have been 268 fatalities, 151 missing, 1,083 injured and almost 60,000 displaced. Many of the victims are reportedly children as around 80 schools were damaged or reduced to rubble when the earthquake hit around 1pm.

ADRA Indonesia quickly deployed an emergency response team to assess the situation. Initial urgent needs include food, water and adequate shelter. ADRA Indonesia is currently on the ground preparing to distribute emergency shelter kits to affected communities.

It is estimated the earthquake toppled more than 22,000 homes. Many residents are fearful to return with looming aftershocks, instead erecting makeshift shelters nearby.
